What Shower Curtains and Breast Implants Have in Common

Filed under: Beauty, Breast Implants, Breasts, Culture and Society, FDA — bethtaylor @ 7:57 am

I must ask myself why this country is so hell bent on ignoring the fact that breast implants are NOT safe.  How could they be when there is a list as long as my leg containing all the toxic chemicals they contain.

Okay, good so this country is very concerned that while taking a shower, we might be exposed to toxins as I learned when I read this article.  But wait a minute…..breast implants contain this chemical as well.  So does this mean that its okay to insert this into our bodies but oh, please, don’t take a shower?????

I continued to read the article and they even mention mold being a problem in the shower!  We know that implants, you know the saline ones that are supposed to have that sterile saline in them?  We know that they can and do grow mold.

I must ask WHY if shower curtains are being modified so they do not contain this chemical, why is it that the Breast Implant Manufacturers continue to make these toxic devices and PS’s insert them into a woman’s body (don’t forget they are FDA approved!).  They continue to claim these devices are safe!  Could it be that you can purchase a shower curtain for a buck at your local dollar store and breast implants cost thousands and thousands of dollars over the long term???   Just like the long list of chemicals, one being polyvinyl chloride, there is a long list of companies making money from these implants.

These ‘Shower Curtain Companies’ have already started making the curtains so that they don’t contain this chemical but what is the plan for breast implants???

Please be careful the next time you take a shower.  It could be dangerous to your health between the PVC and mold.  So I guess we would be safe to say taking a shower with a shower curtain made from PVC that has mold on it and having saline implants that are growing mold in them is really hazardous to your health.

  1. Along time ago I decided no man was worth getting fat for, commiting suicide for, or placing killer implants into my precious body for. My body is a temple not a materbation machine for men. And I’ve caught me some very decent, accomplished, interesting and fun men into my life and even now and there is nothing artificial about me. Like I said, women who have decided to be a materbation machine for men are desperate to please and there neediness gets them nothing permanent in life except usury. Go back to the rules girls and honor your bodies. Men always want what they can’t have and when they honor and adore you their respect is unending. The rules get you that.

  4. Implants can absolutely breed mold. When my saline ones were removed, there was a black mold-like substance attached to the valve. Interesting enough, one of my only allergies as a child was to dust and MOLD. So is it likely that my immune reactions (while having implants) stemmed from my moldy implants…you bet! I sneeze when I’m even in the presence of mold.

  5. I am a research engineer that works primarily with materials. PVC is used because it is the cheapest durable plastic, and its properties can be customized with additives. Not only is PVC harmful, the additives are harmful too (if not worse). For women and mothers everywhere, pay close attention to the use of PVC in anything that touches you or your child, especially when it comes to baby’s toys and sex toys. Visit wikipedia for a very thorough discussion on this plastic.

    Mr. Engineer

P.S. As a man I have always abhored the use of plastic surgery. While I likely represent a minority, I believe that natural, comfortable women are far more attractive.

  7. I hear woman say all the time…”They’re not for men, they’re for me, so I can respect myself.”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahahah

Respect yourself while I stare at your chest? Boobs do not buy respect from me or you… In fact, they further objectify you. The thing is, thats what these women want. Attention. They want to be objects of sexual attraction so that they can feel better than the girl next to them. Since when do women care about what a man thinks?

You may not like what I have written, but deep down inside you know this is true. The vicious cycle of self-perpetuating, self-deprecating insecurities prevent anyone in their right mind from respecting you…anyone, male or female. Seriously… Its pathetic.

Mold is natures answer for f’ing with it. Deal with it. I punch anyone who destroys my artwork, wouldnt you?

Respect yourself first… Then earn respect from others. And stop whining

  8. This is the same problem we see over and over again - people making statements that are not supported by facts.

I have performed over 2000 breast surgeries and removed/ replaced implants for over 15 years. I have never seen any of this “mold” issue. In fact the issue can occur but it is so rare there are only a few reported cases and there are likely good explanation for their occurence and the implant is not the issue.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, what the science and data show is that breast implants have nothing to do with shower curtains and the patients who undergo breast augmentation or reconstruction with current advanced processes that we know produce optimal outcomes - these patients do exceedingly well and have few problems.

  9. Seems as though you are taking advantage of an article about PVC in shower curtains in certain environments and connecting dots to other environments that don’t necessarily exist. While there have been a small number of verifiable instances of bad installs, defects, etc there are many more millions of successful & issue free examples. Truth be told - you are simply trying to prop up your opinion on how you want to control others choices with weakly linked information and scare tactics based on speculation.

  12. As a divorced male I have seen lots of boobs from lots of different women and the fake ones in almost every single case are poorly done and very easy to spot. I would much rather be involved long term with a natural women (regardless of of her chest size) who is full of confidence. Women need to know that they offer much more to men like me than just looks, we are looking for lifetime partners not shallow women primarily focussed on their own looks. To me the superficial shallow women with a pair of store bought fun bags are nothing more than a good time in the sack while searching for the real Mrs. Right.

  13. Doctor, and I bet you’ll say that none of your patients have ever complained of having autoimmune-type symptoms following augmentation as well. No mold, no problems, no worries, right? At least you’ve got the government on your side.

  14. I wonder how many of you making these comments aren’t simply jealous of the often good looking, often young, often slim women that you see with breast implants. Maybe the slim women should start a campaign against fat, oppressive, militant femi-nazis that want to control the choices of everyone because of their own lack of self esteem.

So losers - go eat another bag of chocolate, take your Xanax, and leave the medical concerns to professionals.

    Comment by Truth — June 13, 2008 @ 2:40 pm

  15. Doctor, you say what “science and data show is that breast implants have nothing to do with shower curtains.” What kind of statement is that? The fact of the matter is, science doesn’t show anything because there has been NO SCIENCE done on women who’ve had implants for longer than 5 years. Even one of the guys on the FDA approval committee admitted as much, as you can read in this article. So, we have all sorts of data about threadbare tires - how dangerous it is to keep driving on those tires after they wear out. So, you stick bags of chemicals in women’s chests and you don’t worry about what happens as they wear down over time? And you go around saying the safety data is there, when it really isn’t?

And Truth, it’s amazing how so many women with implants love to throw around the word “jealous.” What are you - in kindergarten? Jealous of what? Of the fact that you spent thousands of dollars getting yourself cut open, and have committed yourself to spending thousands of dollars more in the years to come as you need to replace your implants? That as you get older, you’re going to start getting paranoid that every little illness is the chemicals seeping into your body? That you’re taking the huge risk that things really could go terribly wrong for you and your life ruined because you wanted bigger breasts? Jealous of you, because you think you’ve achieved what every woman aspires to be - slim with big breasts? Sorry to break it to you, but there are a lot of people in this world, myself included, who hold Keira Knightly and Kate Hudson as the gold standards of beauty - which has very little to do with their breast size and a lot to do with their inner confidence.

  16. Bob/Truth/Interesting or whatever your name is….have you looked around to even see what this blog/site is all about?

Before you go making judgments calls on who is writing these blogs and comments….maybe you should take a look around. I think the first place you need to stop is at the top right corner where it says “about Kacey, Krista and Gretchen.” You will learn VERY quickly that all 3 of us are in fact very good looking, young, in-shape, intelligent (need I go on) women.

Then, when you read a little about us there, you can then click on each of our individual websites to read about all of the horrific things we have been through due to having breast implants in our body. I think you will have a brand new outlook on these comments and these posts.

And, hopefully by doing that you will see very quickly that we are so far from jealous of anyone that has breast implants, that your comments are absolutely and completely ridiculous.

We are also so far from femi-nazis, with low self-esteem, that just “want to control” others. The only thing we are doing is freely giving our time, our compassion and our hearts to help other women who are currently going through what we have been through, or helping them make good choices so that they do not have to go through what we have already gone through.

I think it time that you grow up, look around and see what is really happening around you instead of being so close-minded.

  17. I was going to ask you ‘babes’ to post your pictures to back up that ‘extremely beautiful, young, in-shape, intelligent’ description, just to be ornery. But I looked and you DO have photos posted in your ‘about’ section. And you aren’t exagerating.
–Anyway, it’s easy to be ornery/hard to use irony in print, so…

Keeping ourselves natural, inside and out, from breasts to shower curtains, makes the most sense…no matter how safe the studies done so far or presented so slantedly say.

Keep up the good work, girls…er, I mean, women.

  18. Mr. Engineer - Interesting comment and more of a reason to wonder what on earth would posses someone to use PVC in anything let alone implants that are placed in a woman’s body?

This truly is insane and has come about by GREED!

One last comment and that is that I had mold growing in my implants as well. That mold no doubt got into my body because of faulty valves on my Mentor implants but we are hearing more about mold on shower curtains than the mold that grows within saline implants!

  19. “Doctor” is apparently a plastic surgeon named, Dr. Adams. I thought you guys might like to know what Dr. Edward Melmed, another plastic surgeon, said in regards to Doctor’s comments (by the way, Dr. Melmed has removed over 1,000 sets of breast implants):

“Dr. Adams is a paid consultant for the implant manufacturers.

I asssume he is correct in that he has put in many implants.

Why did he take so many out when there are no problems with them???” ~Dr. Edward Melmed

I was wondering how a plastic surgeon would have the time to search the Internet for breast-related items. Now I get it, it’s his JOB. Hey guys, this happens wayyyy more than you think.

  20. Kacey-Good find on the “good doctor.” Girls out there need to know what is going on with the plastic surgeon world….that they are paying people LOTS of money to put the “good” word out there about implants. It’s just like Nicole from implantinfo.com and other websites, those women are paid big bucks by plastic surgeons to host websites and forums. Girls think those websites and forums are unbiased and that they are getting ALL of the info they need in order to make an informed decision. It is simply not true. If you say something negative on those sites, your comments will get deleted and you will be blocked from further posting (I know that first hand, BTW.) Girls need to know this, they are NOT getting all of the info they need by visiting the popular implant sites because they are regulated by the plastic surgeons themselves.
Plastic surgeons will do whatever it takes to glamorize, and make breast implants seem like “everyone is doing it, they are perfectly safe.” Come on girls, if they weren’t doing this, they wouldn’t have a job! Think about it.

  21. I was banned several times from both of those sites. I find it interesting that when I posted the name of my website and asked the other members to please read my experience with saline breast implants before going through with the surgery, within three minutes, it was deleted. I think that all women need to at least be able to make an informed decision by hearing the good, bad and ugly. So I must ask myself why are they hiding the truth? That was a rhetorical question of course as I know why they do this! They are terrified of the truth getting out there and these PS’s might lose some money.

I have women join my group because they just happened to come across it and make comments that they are very happy with their implants. I sure as hell don’t ban them but instead advise them to read all the stories and info there so that when they start experiencing problems, they will know its the implants. I went from doctor to doctor for 3 years wondering why I just continued to get sicker and sicker and some of my symptoms were just not consistent with what I had been diagnosed with.

These people have one goal and that is to try and convince as many women as possible that these devices are safe and the rest of us that have become ill would have become ill anyway. However, I find it interesting that we all improve after the toxic bags are removed!

I no longer bother with those sites because I know that the existence of my forum alone is enough to make their blood boil. We are all helping to get the truth out there. Although I believe all implants should be banned, I know that will never happen so instead I think women at least should have enough information available to them so they know what they are getting into. That was a hell of a lot more than was offered to me.

I see a world someday where few women have implants and there are clear warnings that come along with them much like what has happened with the tobacco companies. It will happen, it will just take time. I remember when you would turn on the TV and the actors were smoking on every show. Every magazine and billboard was an advertisement for cigarettes. That has now been banned and I believe that the breast implant manufacturer’s day will come as well. I’m a bit older than the other ladies on this blog but when I was a kid, everyone smoked. Now very few people smoke and of course recently has been banned in most public places. Very few people smoke because they know too many people that have died of lung cancer and the truth about the dangers of cigarettes have been revealed to all and states it on the package.

All we can hope for is a similar fate for breast implants.

    AMEN!

  22. I find it interesting how Nicole from http://www.implantinfo.com tells the girls/women ALL the time that they should do a lot of research, get all the information, get all their questions answered..blah blah blah. But, then she turns around and blocks women from posting on her site if they say anything negative about implants. How is that for making sure all of the girls get all of the information? She is a total hypocrite. What’s sad to me is that forum is where so many girls go to get all of the information before they make their decision. How can you get all of the information if the moderator blocks anything negative? You are only getting one side!

  23. I’m glad this brought up the issue of Nicole’s website (www.implantinfo.com). I’m just glad that her site is so close to Dr. Zuckerman’s http://www.breastimplantinfo.org, that hopefully women will stumble upon the credible one (Dr. Z’s), instead of the one supported by breast implant manufacturer’s and surgeons. If you take the time to read the science-based information at http://www.breastimplantinfo.org, there’s no way you can walk away believing that breast implants are safe.

    Comment by Kacey — June 15, 2008 @ 9:14 pm

  24. I’ve even seen Nicole from http://www.implantinfo.com turn against one of her most faithful “posters.” A girl who I saw post very frequently answering questions from other girls said something Nicole didn’t like…a new girl asked if silicone could travel to other parts of your body, and the faithful poster answered back and said “yes, it is possible for silicone to travel to other parts of your body, get stuck in your lymph nodes, etc.” She even pointed out that the FDA website clearly points this out. She was just being perfectly honest. Well, Nicole immediately jumps in and says “now girls, this isn’t a place to start nasty rumors, this kind of talk needs to stop right now.” Well, the faithful poster posted back…”I have been posting here a long time, and I have always been honest, I have never started nasty rumors.” And, I never saw her post again. Just goes to show…Nicole will even turn against the girls that are very pro-implant if they say something she doesn’t like.

  25. Krista, I know a lady that was a member of Nikki’s site for a while. She decided to have her implants removed and was very nervous about the decision. She was a member of both a Nikki’s site and my site which we know is all about the truth. (I don’t want to actually post the URL to Nikki’s site as that will rank her higher in the search engines and we don’t want that!) Anyway, this lady was in such distress that she was going back and forth from my site to Nikki’s as she was so damn confused as to what to do. She finally realized that there were just too many sick women out there and went to Dr. Feng for removal. She was in Ohio when she tried posting on Nikki’s site for support and to her surprise, she was banned! She was banned just because she decided on explantation!

As for Kacey’s comment, very good point and I think it is important that some of these sites are named so close to the pro implant sites. I get a good number of members join my group thinking it is pro implant because of the name and to their surprise they start reading the horror stories. The members of my group have been very sucessful in getting ladies to change their mind regarding breast augmentation. All because they stumble upon a forum thinking its all about implants and not for ladies looking to explant because they are sick or just hate their implants.
