Leonard Nimoy’s Beautiful Photos of Larger Women

I’ve always thought Spock was cool, but as a plain human, Leonard Nimoy is even cooler. I was watching the Colbert Report the other night, and suddenly there he was, promoting his new book, The Full Body Project: Photographs by Leonard Nimoy.

Stephen Colbert starts the interview by describing the book as “photographs of women who are larger than what our societal image of beauty is.” Then, of course, he goes on to assert that society has already agreed on what beauty is – “blond, thin, big tits” – and how dare Leonard challenge what society has already agreed upon, haha?

Leonard counters by saying that American women are being sold on the idea we don’t look right (amen, Leonard), that we’re told there’s something wrong with us and we have to buy the pills, diets and surgery to fix it (double amen). But everyone is beautiful, and his book would be appropriate on every coffee table in America, especially those with young ladies in the home (yes, yes, absolutely!).

Anyway, Stephen Colbert is always fun to watch, and Leonard Nimoy has created a book of beautiful photography with an important message for all of us. See the interview for yourself:

But it has to be said that Leonard’s idea is not original. The very talented Laurie Toby Edison, who blogs at Body Impolitic, did it way before he did in her photography book, Women En Large: Images of Fat Nudes.

  1. This site has gone friggin nuts! If I wanted to see overweight nudes or read celebrity gossip, I would look for the porn sites and read People magazine.

Shame on the people who put this site together. You are insulting to the women who have been damaged with breast implants. I will NEVER encourage anyone to come to this site for implant info.

Sheridans! Are you paying attention. I can’t imagine Tom Sheridan agreeing to this site. Or for that matter, Sybil is a lady. What has happened to her that she allows her gracious name to be attached to this mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Dear Mary,
Thank you so much for writing about Leonard’s book and the Colbert interview.
I am a model in the book and have received permission from Leonard to create a MySpace page. If you are on MySpace, please sign up and be a friend. We are all so pleased with all of the work that Leonard is doing, bringing more awareness to the Health At Every Size and other Size Acceptance movements. Thank you for mentioning this other book of photography too. It’s great knowing about it.

  3. MY comment directed to Roxanne…. I am offended by your attack on this site. I have been visiting this blog regularly for quite a while and I find it informatative and entertaining. The posts seem to be with in the description that was given to the blog.

“This blog explores breast implants in the context of everything, including body image, feminism, women’s health, plastic surgery, parenting and media. ”

This blog has never been combative or hostile…. and this is one of the things that I admire about it. I have always found Mary’s and Sybil’s posts to be professional and passionate and many times light hearted and funny.

There are a LOT of other websites that women seeking support and information on breast implants can go to. Mary has IN THE KNOW and Sybil has COMMAND TRUST. Both sites are loaded with concrete information on breast implants.

  4. Roxanne, I’m sorry you were offended by this post, though I can’t for the life of me think why. Body image is such as huge part of why women get breast implants, and includes so many parts of the body, not just our breasts. This blog supports all efforts that help women start feeling beautiful for who they are and not for what they look like. Leonard Nimoy’s book is such an effort. Furthermore, this blog is not just about breast implants. When we set out to create this blog, we knew there were other sites specifically addressing certain elements of illness and implants. In an effort to not repeat the great work of these other sites ( or take away from them), we expanded our vision. We purposely talk about a wide range of things to attract new people ( Like Lady Monster, who was very glad to see our post, so as you can see we are touching all women’s issues) who may not be particularly interested in breast implants but who may learn something about it while they are with us, and maybe join our cause.

Thank you for your thoughts on breast implant information for women. If you feel there is a topic we should address, please let us know and we can research it and put something on about it. Just let us know what you specifically need addressed.

From your post it seems have had a deep personal experience with implants and we would love to hear your story. Please send it in to us and we can further help women looking to our blog for information.

Sybil is an amazing woman. She stands in dignity, grace and integrity at every turn. I am proud to share this blog with her and to call her my friend.

    In Sisterhood,
    Mary
