The BB Surf: What We’ve Been Reading

Today we debut what we hope will be a regular feature of Beauty and the Breast, an occasional (weekly?) roundup of some of the great writing and interesting and/or infuriating pieces we’ve come across as we participate in the Great Conversation about women and women’s issues that’s taking place in the blogosphere.

From Body Impolitic, How Young Is Too Young? About a new product and marketing directed at 10 to 15 year-old girls, telling them that they are already too hairy. Yikes!

Of all the financial commentators swooning over the stock performance of implant manufacturers, we are actually thinking of starting a fan club for Jane Wells of CNBC, who wrote this spot-on analysis, Fake Jane To Rescue Allergan.

From Our Bodies Our Blog, How Not to Write a Health Story. We totally agree. Many women suffering from implant complications are diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and the dismissive tone of the story was offensive and unworthy of the New York Times.

From Bitch Phd, Blogging Miss America So You Won’t Have To. Very amusing live-blogging of televised beauty-pageant-turned-reality show, with pleasantly snarky feminist commentary.

From Women’s Space, White Privilege, the Meritocracy Myth, and Perfect Feminists, Perfect Women. Thoughtful and well-written essay about women’s need to be “perfect.” Notable quote: “It’s like some evil magic suit; misogyny tailors itself so beautifully to the contours of each individual woman’s life, you totally forget it came with a one-size-fits-all tag.”

From Cosmetic Surgery Wife, 5 Reasons why my getting breast implants was the best $5,000 I’ve ever spent. In the first paragraph she says, “I’m really a stay-at-home mom,” and in the next says, “If I hadn’t gotten my new breast implants I would have spent the money on something else anyways, so why not use it to enhance your looks.” The moms we know spend their extra money on their kids.

And finally, in case you haven’t read it yet, this is a must, must, must-read. The Five Great Lies Of Women’s Magazines is the Jezebel blog’s manifesto, it’s reason for being. It expresses with great wit and passion a huge part of the reason Beauty and the Breast needs to exist as well.

  2. I just discovered your blog. Good stuff and I like this entry; more blogs need to offer that feature. I actually interview different bloggers and sites for my column, which just became blog format. I think you’ll find my latest entry on sexual violence against women in the media intriguing. I do a lot of women-issue entries, so feel free to keep an eye on it.
